What Does a Secure LLM API Gateway Solve?

An LLM API gateway gives all of a company's AI calls one entry point for authentication, routing, rate limiting, audit, model fallback, and cost logs.

With one model and one team, calling the vendor’s API directly works fine. As the company grows and adds models, problems pile up. Each business unit holds its own API keys. Nobody tracks total cost. When a model goes down, there is no fallback. After a security incident, nobody can tell which call caused it or who made it. These problems come from how teams connect to models. A better model does not fix them.

An LLM API gateway pulls these problems into one place. With unified authentication, keys no longer sit in each application’s code; the gateway issues and revokes them. With unified routing, each request goes to the model best suited to the task. When one model fails, the gateway falls back to a backup automatically, and the application does not return an error.

Companies tend to overlook cost and audit until something goes wrong. Without a gateway, there is usually no record of what each team spent on model calls, who made the calls, or what data was sent. A gateway turns all of this into queryable logs and bills. They make cost control possible. After a security incident, they are the only evidence the company can produce.

Technical leaders should plan the gateway as company-wide infrastructure, with the same design and maintenance effort they give a database or a message queue. A one-off integration script does not cover it.

If your team keeps adding models and key management keeps getting harder, now is the time to design a gateway layer. Baize AI works on the architecture, routing policy, and audit design for this layer.
